Technological and Intelligent Digital Innovations—the Cornerstone for the Transformation of Electric Power Systems
Abstract: This article presents a comprehensive analysis of technological and intelligent digital innovations in electric power systems worldwide and in Russia. It examines the electric power industry sectors (generation, storage and transmission of electricity, control systems), the modernization of existing equipment, and the implementation of innovative technologies. It is noted that large power generation sources are actively developing, including traditional (nuclear, thermal, and hydraulic power plants) and new ones (primarily based on renewable energy resources), as well as small-scale generation units (microturbines, gas powered electrical generators, etc.). A transition is underway from traditional pumped-storage power plants to new energy storage technologies (electrochemical and others). Energy storage units are used in power systems and locally. In electrical networks, technological progress is leading to an increase in voltage and transmission capacity and the creation of low-voltage microgrids (connecting consumers, small-scale generation units, and energy storage units), including those using direct current. Intelligent digital solutions are being actively implemented in the electric power industry, with the emergence of multiple management entities. It is concluded that, as a result of these innovative processes, modern electric power systems are being transformed into integrated, efficient, multi-subject, cyber-physical, centralized-distributed energy systems with an expanded energy resource base. © Allerton Press, Inc. 2026.
