An adjustable heat-to-power ratio combined heat and power system integrating biomass gasification, solid oxide fuel cell, and gas turbine: Energy, exergy, economic, and exergoeconomic (4E) analyses
Conventional combined heat and power (CHP) systems lack flexibility due to fixed heat-to-power ratio (HPR). To address this challenge, a novel CHP system with an adjustable HPR, integrating biomass gasification, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), and gas turbine (GT) is proposed. By adjusting the separation ratio of gasification syngas, fuel energy was cascaded by the SOFC, GT, and a lithium bromide (LiBr) absorption heat pump subsystem. To achieve near-zero CO2 emissions, oxy-fuel combustion technology was employed. Energy, exergy, economic, and exergoeconomic assessments were conducted under two HPR cases. For the system with an HPR of 0.47 (Case1), the overall energy and exergy efficiencies reached 74.44% and 49.54%, respectively. When the HPR increased to 1.68 (Case2), they were 73.23% and 30.74%, respectively. Both cases demonstrated profitability, yielding exergy product costs of 0.0998 $/kWh and 0.1237 $/kWh, respectively. This flexible, clean, and cost-effective system presents a highly sustainable approach for biomass utilization. © 2026 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC.
