This chapter is concerned with new results of the development and application of a hierarchical approach in the analysis and decision-making to manage the operation and development of energy pipeline systems using the large district heating systems as an example. The general content, possibilities, and relevance of this approach are shown in the context of the unfolding processes of digitalization and smartization of pipeline systems, which aim in particular to take into account the hierarchical construction of the objects themselves and the decision-making processes, and to overcome large dimensionality of emerging modeling problems. The new mathematical models and methods developed within the framework of this approach to solve specific problems are described, including analysis and optimization of operating conditions when managing the systems, search and analysis of market equilibrium options for different economic entities within a single technologically connected pipeline system, probabilistic analysis of the reliability of these systems when managing their development. The results of numerical studies for the proposed methods, as well as the results of their application to real objects, are presented for all the problems in question. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
