The chapter presents main components of the methodology of hierarchical modeling of the energy sector and its constituent energy systems. We trace the evolution of hierarchical modeling in making long-term projections of the development of the energy sector of the entire country and its regions in relation to the development undergone by the economy. The chapter presents the sequence of steps involved in making projections of the energy sector and the main problems to be solved in this process. Issues related to the handling of multiple criteria and aggregation in the hierarchy of projection models from the energy sector are elucidated. We present a methodological approach that can be used when arguing the feasibility of options for the power supply of isolated (decentralized) regions. Special attention is paid to the methodology for studying cross-border energy flows through a case study of countries in Northeast Asia. We demonstrate the features unique to the methodology underpinning the study of ensuring energy security and those of building hierarchical models for the study of ensuring energy security and reliability of fuel and energy supply to consumers at the level of countries and their regions. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
