The study addresses methodological issues related to reliability of district heating systems of large industrial complexes. The key defining features of these systems, which distinguish them from district heating systems serving urban areas, are identified in the context of reliability analysis. Based on the reliability aspects revealed within the study, the basic principles and methods for stochastic modeling and modeling of physical and technical processes of the systems under consideration are proposed. They are generalized in a resulting methodological framework for reliability analysis and synthesis of the district heating systems. The study also formulates some approaches for enhancing the reliability of steam distribution and heat delivery to consumers of such systems based on functional and structural redundancy. The results of analysis and design of solutions for improving and ensuring the reliability of an operating district heating system of a large industrial complex are presented. © 2026 Elsevier Ltd.
