This chapter discusses the application of the hierarchical approach to solving the problems of managing the development of pipeline (gas, oil, oil products, heat, cold, etc.) and coal energy systems. Along with traditional structures, they include distributed energy generation based on renewable energy sources, smart grids, smart metering systems, and others. The relevance of the hierarchical approach when used both at the level of “Energy industry - Energy system” and, if necessary, at the level of a detailed representation (modeling) of an individual energy system is first of all due to the complexity of the structure of energy systems, their territorial distribution, variety of components, multidimensionality of emerging issues, and approaches to address them. To a large extent, energy pipeline systems, which provide network structures and ensure a continuous process of transport and distribution of energy carriers (gas, oil, heat, cold, etc.), share similar procedures used for their modeling and a certain similarity of models used in planning their expansion, which holds true for each of them. At the same time, the models of various energy systems, with all the commonality of their representation at a high level of abstraction from the specific structure and properties of their components, are different due to their specificity as noted above and the technologies behind their operation. Coal supply systems have particularly unique characteristics due to the discrete transportation of coal. Discrete transportation is also largely used in the systems supplying petroleum products. These engineering and technological features affect the nature of the hierarchical modeling of various energy systems. Of particular interest are the problems of planning the expansion of integrated energy systems. The experience of their formalization based on the hierarchical principles of modeling and approaches to solving them are still in their infancy. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
