A comprehensive study of energy systems at the technical, economic, and technological levels can identify the main proportions in the development of energy systems, taking into account their interaction and mutual influence. However, many fairly important factors of individual energy systems in the models of the energy sector and integrated energy systems have to be considered in an approximate and aggregated way, due to the high dimensionality of these models that represent a set of large-scale geographically dispersed systems of a complex multidimensional structure, with their numerous operating conditions and the need to consider many abnormal situations, including emergencies. Therefore, in order to clarify and detail the solutions, it becomes necessary to move to the level of individual and specific energy systems. In fact, this way the principles of hierarchical modeling are implemented. The chapter presents the most typical examples of solving the problems of expansion planning of electric power systems using a hierarchy of models, with different sets thereof as depends on the statement of the corresponding problem. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
