Research topics:

  • Theory, mathematical models and methods for development management and operation control of local, regional, interconnected, state and interstate electric power systems (EPS);
  • Scientific and methodological principles of the systems of computer-aided design, computer-aided systems of scientific research in the electric utility industry and their implementation on the base of advanced computers and information technologies;
  • Strategies and programs of long-term electric utility industry development in Russia and its regions, trends and regularities of its development in terms of the economic, social, environmental and other factors;
  • Potentialities, efficiency and problems of creation and operation of the interstate interconnections, the Eurasian and world electric power systems; 
  • Design of tools for control and diagnostics of technical state of power facilities in power systems.

Main recent theoretical and methodological results are: 

  • theoretical principles of the hierarchical technology for substantiation of inhomogeneous electric power systems (EPS) development; 
  • methodology of EPS development efficiency evaluation in an environment of many subjects of relations; 
  • mathematical models of EPS development in current conditions; 
  • methods of the multi-objective analysis of solutions at EPS development planning in the context of different preferences; 
  • theoretical principles and methods of the analysis of inhomogeneities and weak places in EPS, their consideration in the EPS analysis, simulation and control; 
  • methodological essentials and methods to study and suppress harmonics in HV networks of EPS; 
  • mathematical methods and models to study EPS transients; 
  • methods of measurement data processing for modeling (state estimation) of bulk EPS by using the test equations methodology;
  • technique, mathematical models and methods of optimal EPS operation planning with adaptive correction of state variables at later stages of control; 
  • models and methods of creating market mechanisms for interaction of jointly operating but economically independent EPS, methods of compromise management of such power interconnections;
  • basics of operation and emergency control coordination for large-scaled EPS by example of electric power systems of European Union and Russia. 

Applied works:

  • Strategies and programs for development of electric power industry and EPS ;
  • Organizational structure and operational principles of electricity markets, methods and mechanisms of their management, tariff policy;
  • Software development to study normal and emergency operating conditions of EPS and their control at different territorial levels of dispatching.

The leading researchers of the department are members of the Academy of Electro-Technical and International Energy Academy, CIGRE, IEEE.

The department has stable links with many foreign institutions. It carries out successful and mutually useful joint studies with the Universities Dortmund and Magdeburg (Germany) on the problems of EPS control. Agreements on scientific cooperation have been concluded with China Electric Power Research Institute in Beijing and University of Lousanne (Switzerland). The researchers actively participate in such recognized international conferences as CIGRE, PSCC, IEEE PES Meetings, etc.
