The paper expounds the characteristics proposed by the author for the objective developmental tendencies of power engineering; these are subdivided into ″external″ tendencies which reveal the proportionality of the development of power engineering in the national economy, and ″internal″ tendencies which determine the direction of development of scientific-engineering progress in power engineering. The paper unfolds an analysis of these tendencies from the aspect of estimating the levels of electrification of the national economy and the development of heat supply and motorization in the USSR.
